Lake Oswego Acupuncture Clinic Provides Cupping and Gua Sha
Medical Cupping Therapy
Chinese Medical cupping is a type of modality that creates a suction on the skin. This technique called fire cupping is done by creating a vacuum seal by setting a cotton ball on fire that has been soaked in rubbing alcohol and placing it quickly in the cup. The oxygen is extinguished from within the cup and quickly placed on the skin of a particular area of the body. Once placed on the skin, the cups can remain stationary or be moved in a gliding technique along the area of the body. The most common area is the back and shoulders.
The Benefits Of Cupping:
Promote blood circulation to tissue
Relieve muscle tension and pain
Remove stagnation of blood, lymph, dead cells, and toxins deep within an area of the body
Chinese cupping can treat musculo-skeletal pain and stiffness like back and shoulder pain, stomach pain, nausea, diarrhea, asthma, common cold, couching, cellulite and weight loss. It is even used to reduce wrinkles!
Chinese cupping is a painless and safe form of treatment. Patients report it feeling like a deep tissue massage and find it very relaxing.
Cupping does leave marks that resemble a bruise. It is not a bruise. These marks mean that there is a deep level of stagnation and blockages, toxins deep within the tissue and the cups pull it out allowing healthy blood and Qi flow to heal the area. These markings do disappear within a few days. It is recommend that you keep the treated area covered for 48 hours and protected from the environment. The pores of your skin are opened from cupping and can leave you vulnerable.
Scraping The Pain Away With Gua Sha Therapy
Gua sha is a Chinese medical therapy using a gua sha tool and scraping the skin. The gua sha technique is to first apply an oil to the skin and with slight pressure to scrape the skin repeatedly until it turns red. This technique leaves marks that may resemble bruising but is not a bruise. These marking go away within 2-3 days.
Benefits Of Gua Sha Therapy:
Reduce inflammation and pain
Stimulating the immune system
Removes stagnation and toxic cellular buildup within the tissues
Promotes the circulation of Qi, blood and lymph to the tissue so the body can heal a particular area
Gua Sha is used to treat musculo-skeletal conditions of pain, spasms and stiffness, release excess heat from fevers, common cold, and asthma. It is used in facial rejuvenation with a very soft technique without leaving marks on the face and treating wrinkles, age spots, and dark circles around the eyes.
